The Depot Days Festival, a beloved annual tradition, transformed the quaint small town into a bustling hub of excitement. With incredible vendors, mouthwatering food, live music, and non-stop family-friendly fun, each year the festival is a celebration of Hartselle’s rich railroad heritage and vibrant community spirit.

Honoring Hartselle’s Railroad History

Held each year on the third Saturday in September, the Depot Days Festival pays tribute to the town’s roots in the railroad industry. Established in 1870 along the South and North Alabama Railroad, Hartselle’s history is deeply intertwined with the growth and prosperity that the railway brought to the region. The festival, hosted by the Hartselle Area Chamber of Commerce, highlights this heritage while showcasing the town’s modern charm.

A Day Full of Activities

The 43rd annual Depot Days Festival took place on Sept. 21, 2024, from 8 am to 4 pm, in and around 110 Railroad Street SW in downtown Hartselle. Admission is free, making it an accessible and inviting event for families and visitors alike.

Festival highlights include:

  • Live Entertainment: Three stages feature a variety of talent, from local bands to school groups. Performances this year will include acts like the Hartselle Chorus, Huntsville Drum Line, Calhoun Show Band, Tiger Paws, Alabama Heathens, Face the Wall, Camacho and more.
  • Kids’ Activities: Children can enjoy a petting zoo, pony rides, and a Teddy Bear Clinic sponsored by Decatur Morgan Hospital, staffed by was staffed by Dr. Grace Williams of Decatur Morgan Pediatrics and the Hartselle High School Medical Academy students.
  • Art and Car Shows: Admire original art from local creators and explore classic and modern vehicles at the car, truck, and motorcycle show.
  • Food and Craft Vendors: Savor delicious treats from food trucks and browse unique handmade crafts.
  • Tractor and Engine Show: A nod to the region’s agricultural heritage, this display is always a crowd favorite.

A Week of Festivities

In the days leading up to the main event, Hartselle hosts additional activities, including a 5K race and a beauty pageant. These events set the tone for a week of community celebration and camaraderie.

Downtown Hartselle, listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Hartselle Downtown Commercial Historic District, is home to over 30 antique and gift shops. Visitors can also enjoy the charm of a town that serves as a stop on the Southern Literary Trail and the birthplace of renowned journalist and novelist William Bradford Huie.
