Gorgeous Morning, Grueling Race Course

On a cloudless, fall-like Saturday morning, the challenging 5.46 mile course started at Otey’s Edgewood in Homewood taking the runners through Homewood and Mountain Brook neighborhoods to the finish line at Otey’s in Crestline Village. Those familiar with running the numerous hills between Homewood and Mountain Brook appreciate the difficultly of the course which was echoed by many runners upon crossing the finish line. The Male Overall Winner was Charlie Sharbel with a time of 30:42, and the Female Overall Winner was Laura Winston at 42:59.

The Robert E. Reed Gastrointestinal Oncology Research Foundation was formed in 2002 while Robert Reed was battling pancreatic cancer. Mr. Reed felt strongly that creating a focus on GI cancer research and patient care would accelerate the discovery of a cure. Since its inception, the foundation has significantly raised awareness and understanding about all gastrointestinal cancers.

Celebrating At The After Party

The race after party was held in the green space near Otey’s Crestline with awards, refreshments and more. We’re guessing many of the runners planned to visit one of the Otey’s locations later in the day for recovery with a famous Rodney’s Cheeseburger and a cold adult beverage!

Finish the Fight Iron Bowl Casino Party

While this was the first Otey’s To Otey’s Run, the foundation has been hosting the Finish the Fight Iron Bowl Party since 2004, and it’s widely known as one of Birmingham’s favorite fall events.
