For most of us, dog shows are a world we only glimpse in pop culture—think the comedy Best in Show or the prestigious Westminster Dog Show in New York. But did you know Mobile hosts its very own top-tier dog show? For over 100 years, the Gulf Coast Classic Dog Show has been bringing the best of the best to the Port City, cementing its status as a beloved local tradition.
In 2024, the Mobile Kennel Club (founded in 1921) and the Singing River Kennel Club proudly presented the 103rd Gulf Coast Classic Dog Show. Held at The Grounds in Mobile from September 5-8, the event welcomed hundreds of dogs, breeders, handlers, and spectators from across the nation.
A Showcase of Top Dogs
This AKC-licensed event featured dogs of every breed, from tiny toys to towering hounds. Attendees marveled as these exceptional canines took to the ring, demonstrating their best in categories like Conformation and Junior Showmanship.
Highlights of the weekend included:
- Breed Judging in Conformation: Showcasing each dog’s adherence to breed standards.
- National Owner-Handled Series: Where owner-handlers took the spotlight.
- Junior Showmanship Competition: Featuring young handlers competing with skill and poise.
- Puppy Competition: A heart-melting category for puppies aged 4 to 6 months.
- Fast CAT: A thrilling 100-yard dash that had tails wagging and spectators cheering.

The Gulf Coast Classic wasn’t just about winning ribbons; it was a celebration of the bond between humans and their dogs. Vendors filled the venue with unique products, from custom collars to dog-themed merchandise, ensuring there was something for every pet lover to enjoy.
“We like to have a good time. Everybody is laughing. We’re here enjoying our dogs. That’s basically what it is,” said Tonya Saksa, a member of the Mobile Kennel Club. “We’re companions to our dogs—it’s not the other way around. Even the professional handlers here are in it for the love of the dog, and they’re having a great time too.”
