A brunch classic with a tasty and festive Mardi Gras twist
Mardi Gras is all about indulging so why not combine the flavors of King Cake with the decadence of French toast? This dish will be the hit of your Mardi Gras brunch celebration.

King Cake French Toast is a festive twist on a Mardi Gras classic, turning the iconic cinnamon-swirled pastry into a decadent breakfast dish. Thick slices of brioche or king cake are dipped in a rich custard, griddled until caramelized, and topped with a bourbon cream cheese glaze and a dusting of purple, green, and gold sugar. It’s indulgent, celebratory, and the perfect way to start a Carnival-themed brunch.
Ingredients
- 1 large brioche loaf (or leftover king cake), sliced 1-inch thick
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- ½ cup heavy cream
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- ¼ tsp nutmeg
- Pinch of salt
- Butter for frying
Bourbon Cream Cheese Glaze
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 3 tbsp bourbon (or up to 6 tbsp if you want extra boozy)
- 2 tbsp heavy cream room temperature
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 3 tbsp softened, cream cheese
- Purple, green and gold sanding sugar (optional)
Directions
Step 1: In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
Step 2: Heat a large skillet over medium heat and melt butter.
Step 3: Dip each slice of brioche/king cake in the custard mixture, coating both sides.
Step 4: Cook for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown.
Step 5: Combine powdered sugar, bourbon, vanilla extract, butter, and cream and whisk until smooth. Drizzle over the french toast and sprinkle with the colored sugar. Serve warm and enjoy! (Serves 6)
