Cheer On The Tide While Sipping A Yellow Hammer
The Yellow Hammer is a popular game day cocktail made famous by Gallettes, a campus bar on The Strip at The University of Alabama. It’s a main stay of game days in Tuscaloosa with the bar serving 4,000 to 5,000 of the fruity drinks when the Tide plays!
A stone’s throw from Bryant-Denny Stadium, you’ll find Gallettes, the birthplace of the Yellow Hammer. Since 1976, this iconic bar has been delighting Bama fans with its signature libation, served in vibrant yellow plastic tumblers. Despite its legendary status, Gallettes remains tight-lipped about the precise recipe, leaving enthusiasts to craft their own interpretations. Here’s our take on the classic drink—serve it in a yellow cup to capture the essence of this cherished Tuscaloosa tradition.
Ingredients
- 2 oz vodka
- 2 oz light rum
- 1 oz amaretto liqueur
- 4 oz orange juice
- 7 oz pineapple juice
- Splash of grenadine
- Ice
- Orange slices, maraschino cherries and fresh mint leaves for garnish if you’re feeling fancy (NOTE: Gallettes does not do this but we think it’s a nice touch)
Directions
Step 1: Fill a shaker with ice cubes.
Step 2: Add the vodka, light rum, amaretto liqueur, orange juice, and pineapple juice to the shaker.
Step 3: Shake the mixture well until chilled.
Step 4: Fill a plastic tumbler with ice. Pour the mixture over ice and add a splash of grenadine. The grenadine will sink to the bottom, creating a layered effect. Garnish with orange slices, maraschino cherries and mint leaves.
Step 5: Serve immediately and yell Roll Tide!
Note: Feel free to adjust the sweetness and alcohol content according to your preference.
