“Exer-plore” On A Paddleboard

Paddleboarding is a wonderful way to unwind, recharge, and connect with the natural world. So grab your board and “exer-plore” and you’ll feel refreshed and invigorated.

Ride the Waves: Dive into Adventure with Paddleboarding!

Paddleboarding is one of our favorite ways to “exer-plore” — that’s our phrase for exercising while exploring! Coming in a close second to cruising in a boat (with a beverage), hopping on a paddleboard is a delightful way to embrace nature and enjoy some outdoor adventure. Gliding across the calm waters—that means an early wakeup in the summer to avoid boat waves—you’re treated to breathtaking views.

Explore And Uncover Hidden Gems

Here in Alabama, we are blessed to have so many bodies of water for our recreational pursuits from the many lakes and rivers crisscrossing the state to Mobile Bay to the Gulf of Mexico. One of the joys of paddleboarding is the opportunity to explore hidden coves, secluded beaches, and quiet corners that are inaccessible by other means. As you navigate your way around, you’ll encounter an array of wildlife up close and personal from birds and waterfowl to fish darting in and around your board. With each paddle stroke, you feel closer to the beauty and serenity of the outdoors.

Exercise To Your Heart’s (And Muscles’) Delight

If you’re seeking a bit of exercise, paddleboarding offers an amazing full-body workout. Balancing while standing up on the board working against the water’s unstable surface engages your core and leg muscles while paddling gives your arms, shoulders and back an unbelievable workout. For a less intense workout, stay on your knees while paddleboarding—the lower center of gravity makes it easier. This low-impact activity is great for your cardiovascular system without straining your joints. Plus, the tranquil surroundings and gentle rhythm of paddling make it a relaxing and rejuvenating experience for both body and mind.

Health Benefits Aplenty!

Paddleboarding delivers beaucoup health benefits for your mind and body making it not only an enjoyable recreational activity but also the perfect way to improve your overall well-being. Here are some of the key health benefits of paddleboarding:

  1. Full-body workout: Paddleboarding works multiple muscle groups including the core, arms, shoulders, back, and legs. Balancing on the board requires constant core stabilization, while paddling works the upper body muscles. Over time, regular paddleboarding can help improve strength, endurance, and muscle tone.
  2. Low-impact exercise: Unlike running or jogging, paddleboarding is gentle on the joints, making it suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels. It provides a cardiovascular workout without putting excessive strain on the knees, hips, and ankles, making it ideal for individuals recovering from injuries or those with joint issues.
  3. Improves balance: Paddleboarding requires good balance and coordination to stay upright on the board and navigate through the water. As you paddle and adjust your body position to maintain stability, you’ll improve your overall balance and coordination skills.
  4. Reduces stress: Spending time on the water allows you to disconnect from your daily stressors allowing you to relax. The calming effects of being surrounded by nature have lasting impacts on your mood not to mention the boost from post exercise endorphins!

Be Safe Out There

When embarking on any water activity, you should take safety into account. Before heading out, check weather conditions and avoid paddling in rough or choppy waters—remember the early wakeup we mentioned! When paddleboarding, always wear a personal flotation device (PFD) and attach a leash to your ankle to keep the board tethered to you in case of falls. Stay hydrated, wear sunscreen and bring a whistle for emergencies. It’s best to paddle with a buddy and let someone know of your expected return time.
