CELEBRATING ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY SUN DEVILS’ 1987 ROSE BOWL WIN

Arizona State University had never won a Rose Bowl. And in 1987, the Maroon and Gold Sun Devils were facing, in this oldest of bowl games, the mighty Wolverines of Michigan.

The game matched two powerfully potent offenses against two strongly stubborn defenses. It had been ASU quarterback Jeff Van Raaphorst’s (#10) second thousand yard passing season.

Michigan jumped out ahead and led 15-3. But MVP Van Raaphorst engineered a comeback. ASU scored their first touchdown on a pass play to Bruce Hill (#29). In the second half, still trailing Michigan, ASU drove the ball to the one-yard line. It was second and goal. Van Raaphorst took the snap, dropped back and looked to his right for a receiver. He spotted Hill racing down the back line of the end zone. Still back stepping and off balance he lofted a perfect arch only inches over the extended arms of Michigan’s Andy Moeller. Hill, who had beaten the Michigan defensive back, leaped into the air and grasp the ball securely in his outstretched hands. Ballerina-like steps kept his feet in bounds for a winning score and a share of the Rose Bowl record for touchdown catches.
